Last Saturday OutInCanberra caught up with Vogue Australia’s creative consultant and founder of digital fashion and lifestyle blog Badlands, Talisa Sutton, at the Canberra Centre’s VIP Style Masterclass.
Learning all the tricks of the fashion-world trade, we were opened up to her insights on carving a career in the digital world and how to incorporate more styles into everyday life.

Where did the idea to start Badlands derive from?
I wanted a creative outlet to share my inspirations and personal work while I was studying graphic design.
The blog evolved out of my love for visual diaries. I had been making collage-filled books since high school where I would piece together inspiration, magazine tears and illustrations. I had such a small apartment, and a big stack of books so it was time for me to take things online!
What is the story behind the name Badlands?
The name of the blog is actually titled after one of my favourite films, Badlands.
I have always loved film, art, fashion and architecture – and given how special this film was to me, and that it’s such an icon, it seemed like the perfect choice for a name.
What do you love most about what you do – in regards to both your blog and also as a contributor to the Vogue Spy Style network?
I love the creative freedom and flexibility. Being able to travel and work with so many talented individuals and amazing brands is such a treat. Joining the Vogue blogging network has also been a great opportunity; I have been able to work on some fantastic jobs with incredible clients like Georg Jensen, Gucci Fragrance, Olympus and Hardy Brothers Jewelers.
How would you describe your personal style?
I’d say classic and minimal – I love minimal, monochrome pieces! I still like to mix things up by pairing a dressier look with sneakers and denim.
What is your favourite item of clothing in your wardrobe?
I’ve always loved a good quality leather jacket.
What are you saving up for?
I’m lusting over a black Gucci Dionysus bag – it’s on the top of my list!
What fashion trends should we look out for this season?
For fashion trends I’m loving camel coats, leather and suede, a nod to the ‘90’s through layering (think camis over turtlenecks and slip dresses layered with a long sleeve tee and a big coat), statement earrings, jewel-tones and cozy over-sized knits.
Looking back, what was your most “cringe” fashion moment?
My style has evolved over the years and looking back there are a few things I wore that I definitely wouldn’t wear now. I have no regrets though!
What is an average day like for you?
There are no average days in the life of fashion and blogging! I need start the day with a good coffee and catch up on my emails.
Then my day could involve anything from travel to shooting, meetings to events and styling to designing.
I love working in a fast-paced environment and having a change of scenery!
Who are your favourite designers and why?
I’m loving Bassike and Camilla & Marc – the fabrications and cuts are always perfect. My favourite designers for evening wear and statement pieces are Dion Lee and Ellery – they’re always creating new cutting edge silhouettes and detailing.
What is your number one tip for styling your home?
Keep it simple, cozy and minimal! My partner and I are settling into a new place soon and these tips are on the top of my inspiration list.
I love thoughtful yet understated furnishings, crisp whites and soft grey tones.
Adding a little texture is perfect for winter, whether it’s a new throw with tasseled detailing or a shearling to drape over your office chair. It creates a cozy, warm feeling which is perfect for winter.
